Biography
Dr. Ratna Babu Chinnam received his B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Mangalore University (India) in 1988 and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Industrial Engineering from Texas Tech University (U.S.A.) in 1990 and 1994, respectively. He is currently an Associate Professor in the Industrial & Manufacturing Engineering Department at Wayne State University. Prior to that, he was an Assistant Professor with the Industrial & Manufacturing Engineering Department at North Dakota State University from Fall of 1994 to Summer 2000. He is the author of over 75 technical publications. His publications appeared in such journals as IEEE Trans. on Reliability Engineering, IEEE Trans. on Semiconductor Manufacturing, IEEE Tran. on Neural Networks, and International Journal of Production Research. His research interests include smart engineering systems, intelligent manufacturing, autonomous diagnostics/prognostics, operations management, and supply chain coordination. He is currently the associate editor for the International Journal of Modeling and Simulation and Advisory Board Member for Scientific Journals International. He regularly serves on several international conference planning committees such as IJCNN, FUZZ IEEE, ANNIE, and IASTED’s NIC. His current and past research is funded by such agencies as the National Science Foundation (NSF), NSF EPSCoR, the US Department of Transportation (DoT), and the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDoT). He carried out collaborative research with Ford Motor Company and DaimlerChrysler and consulted for such companies as Sirius Satellite Radio, Energy Conversion Devices, and Tecton. He is a member of Alpha Pi Mu, the Institute for Operations Research and Management Science (INFORMS), and the North American Manufacturing Research Institute (NAMRI)..

Research Group
Director, Center for Supply Chain Research
The primary aim of the Supply Chain Research group, started in 2003, is to develop a viable yet comprehensive framework to facilitate “coordination” in supply chains through strategic, tactical, and operational decision support tools and agents. The group aims to develop methods, tools, and algorithms for improved supply chain coordination by bringing together multi-agent systems, computational intelligence, advanced statistical and operations research methods (in particular Graphical Models and stochastic optimization techniques), and game theory (in particular multi-agent reinforcement learning). Collaborations are currently in place with Ford Motor Company and General Motors.

Director, Center for Smart Engineering Systems
The objective of this center is to pursue challenges in the design and development of smart engineering systems for enhancing productivity and enabling highly efficient utilization of resources. In particular, our focus is on manufacturing systems, quality/reliability engineering, and operations management. We meet this objective through effective utilization and extension of knowledge in traditional areas such as operations research and statistics and emerging areas of computational intelligence.
